The answer is actually pretty simple.  Though the numbers may suggest renting is more beneficial in the present, the forced savings component of a mortgage payment allows you to build wealth over time.  Owning a home is a key reason why the median net worth of a homeowner is almost $200,000 while the median net worth of a renting household is just over $5,000. So stretch yourself a bit in the short term for a payoff in the long term.
