New data from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and Structured Portfolio Management in Stamford, Connecticut shows that the average annual returns from owning and renting single family homes in large US cities nearly equals the annual returns from a balanced, well-managed stock portfolio.  With low interest rates and strong rental demand, this may be a good time to consider diversifying your portfolio by buying a home and becoming a landlord.
